Gas Fireplace Insert Project This is the stack kit
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I went up to the chimney and measured the opening. Now I'm forming the cap so it wraps around the chimney
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Bending the cap flashing around a piece of Oak
Gas Fireplace Insert Project The chimney cap is ready to go on. One duct is for exhaust and the other for makeup air
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I primed the cap with etching primer for aluminum
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Label the ends because when you drop them down the chimney you won't know which is which
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Attached and sealed the flue pipe to the chimney cap with silicone seal and sheet metal screws
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Dropped a pull line down the chimney.
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Streached the duct out to 25' which is the length of the chimney
Gas Fireplace Insert Project We fed the duct and chimney cap up onto the roof. Wrapped the fragile chimney cap in a towel so it didn't get dammaged dragging across the roof
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I tied my pull line around the 2 ducts and an assistant pulled them down the chimney as I fed the lines in. The chimney was a straight drop so it was easy
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I stuffed some fiberglass insulation down the chimney around the ducts with a stick to keep cold air from getting in the house
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I sealed the cap to the top with silicone seal. I installed plastic anchors in the cement chimney to screw the cap on
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I had to make a new mount for my weather station because it used to be bolted to the old chimney cap
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Painted the stack to match the house
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I probably should have done this before I installed the ducts. You cut out the flue damper to make room for the ducts to come down and to ensure you can't close the flue which would trap CO in the house. It's a real mess to do
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Showing the ducts that were dropped down the chimney by the cut off flue damper. Now you know why I labeled the ducts
Gas Fireplace Insert Project My Napoleon XIR4N-1SB and front trim gets delivered
Gas Fireplace Insert Project This is what the Napoleon XIR4N-1SB actually looks like
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Connect the vents to the fireplace attachment bracket making sure the intake and exhaust are correct. Use silicon and sheetmetal screws. The bucket with the bricks is used to support the assenbly while the silicon dries
Gas Fireplace Insert Project I packed the area above the firebox with insulation. Make sure you take the paper off or it could catch fire
Gas Fireplace Insert Project This is what the fireplace attachment bracket looks like in the chimney with the insulation packed above it
Gas Fireplace Insert Project The new fireplace insert is ready to go in. I assume that you already have gas and electric in the firebox. This is usually accomplished by drilling a hole in the firebrick and bringing the lines up into the firebox
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Using pipe sealer for gas on the threaded gasline fitting
Gas Fireplace Insert Project The fireplace has a 3 prong plug for power which serves as a disconnect. I wired a plug on the end of the romex electrical supply
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Testing the new plug
Gas Fireplace Insert Project When the fireplace is pushed into the firebox its bottom has to be level with the top of the hearth or you'll never be able to slide it out for maintenance. I laid a sample of stone the thickness of the hearth next to the firebox. I got lucky and standard cement bricks were the right height to shim the fireplace even with the top of the hearth. I cut some old patio blocks to keep the bricks from getting pushed back out of the way when the fireplace is slid in.
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Insert backup batteries that allow the unit to operate if the power goes out. This fireplace insert is a viable backup for your home furnace
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Slide the fireplace sideways into the firebox and connect the gas and turn on the valve
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Rotate the fireplace around and plug it in. Tuck the gas line and wire out of the way and make sure the fireplace attachment bracket is hanging level from right to left and far enough down to touch the rear of the fireplace (important). Push the fireplace part way into the firebox on top of the brick shims being careful to line up the fireplace attachment bracket with the angle tabs on the top of the fireplace insert
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Insert the long screw through the tab in the top front into the threaded bracket. As you tighten the screw which pulls the bracket under the side tabs and forward push the fireplace into the firebox keeping the ducts from coming forward and getting kinked. This can be the most difficult part of the installation depending on how much room you have at the top.
Gas Fireplace Insert Project You now install the ceramic back and side plates
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Now you install the logs
Gas Fireplace Insert Project Put the glass front on and test out the unit. I didn't bolt the surround on because the hearth stone hasn't been delivered
